Monsters VS. Aliens

This week is Spring Break, so all the kids are out of school. That means that Kaitlynn (our 15-year old daughter) is home all week, and the last thing she wants to do is sit around the house.

So, needless to say – I’m not going to be spending much time at work for the next few days.

Instead, I’ll be taking time out to spend with Kaitlynn.

We kicked the Spring Break festivities off yesterday by going to see “Monsters VS. Aliens”.

This isn’t a movie that I’d normally go see in the theater, but hey, when you’ve got kids, anything is fair game.

And truth is, the movie was pretty entertaining.

Whenever I watch a movie, I’m always looking for the underlying stories, or the underlying lessons – and yes, “Monsters VS. Aliens” had many.

The biggest one was this:

We can insure our future success – in ANY endeavor – by recalling our past successes.

In the movie, one of the characters brought this lesson to light.

As she was recounting a recent incident, and how well she’d done, she simultaneously related it to her future by saying, “Because I accomplished that, I can do ANYTHING”.

I can recall when I started my first business venture back in 1996, I said something very similar to myself, and it went like this…

“Because I just spent 7 years working in the most dangerous job in the world, as an Alaska Fisherman, running my own business will be EASY in comparison”.

But, when you think about it, the two have absolutely nothing in common.

Fishing in Alaska has nothing to do with running a business.

The skills required for each are entirely different.

But…

In MY mind, there was NO difference.

Because I accomplished the former, I could accomplish the later as well.

This is a POWERFUL concept, and few people ever pick up on it.

Personally, I owe my mentor, Mr. Matt Furey, for taking the time to drill this concept into my noggin so I can get maximum benefit from it.

Most folks continually look at their past failures, and say to themselves, “Because I failed at that, I’m going to fail at this too”.

I could easily do the same thing – but I choose not to.

I’ve had many failures in my life.

For example, I failed Geometry in high school.

As a result, I could easily say to myself, “Because you failed Geometry, you’re going to fail in business”.

Fact is, if I wanted to believe such a thing, there’s an endless list of failures I could draw from, in order to prove my point.

But I refuse to do that.

Instead, I choose to recall my successes.

I recall my successes, and use them as proof that I can accomplish anything else I set out to do.

It’s simply a matter of making the decision to do so.

I can tell you that recalling your successes is MUCH more productive.

It makes you feel better.

It virtually guarantees your future success in anything you undertake.

And… it gives you a GREAT sense of power.

Try it and you’ll see what I mean.

Take a moment right now and recall a previous success that you’ve had.

Now bring that feeling forward to a project that you’re working on right now – and tell yourself, “Because I was successful in the past, I will be successful NOW”.

See…

I told you.

This is a POWERFUL tool, and now, you can use it any time you choose.

I trust that you will.

Dedicated to your success,
Kevin Thompson

P.S. I’ve got a MAJOR announcement to make in the next week or so. Can’t tell you the exact date yet, but I’ll keep you posted as we move forward.
