I got an email from Perry Marshall the other day, and he was talking about an interesting thing that happened at one of his recent seminars.
One of the presenters wanted to walk the attendees through an exercise, so he asks them, “What is the WORST email subject line that you could possibly send to your customer”?
People started shouting…
“Nothing I told you to do last year actually works.”
“All my testimonials are fake.”
“The only thing I want is your money.”
Upon reading this, it really made me think… back to when I started my first business in 1996.
At that time in my life, money was my driving motivation.
That’s why I started my business in the first place – to make money.
But today, things are much different.
I’m motivated by the work I get to do, because it gives me an incredible sense of purpose and meaning in my life.
By sharing the experiences and discoveries that have shaped my life over the years, I get to make a huge and lasting impact on other people’s lives.
I can’t imagine doing anything, other than what I’m doing right now.
Yes, things have certainly changed since 1996, and the most interesting thing is the fact that once I took my focus off “the money”, and put it on what was REALLY important, the money just started to come in.
But as I look around at everything going on these days, I see that the majority of people are still focused on money.
This is true when it comes to business owners and consumers alike.
The reason they’re so focused on money is because they feel that they don’t have enough of it.
They feel that it’s lacking in their lives.
And it creates an interesting dynamic.
Many business owners become more determined to make a buck, and will do almost anything to make it happen, even if that means being dishonest.
At the same time, consumers become more and more skeptical, afraid to trust anyone.
It’s this distrust that causes people to lash out, even if their accusations are unfounded.
Case in point:
I just got an email the other day from someone calling me a fraud and a scam artist.
This person had found my website, browsed around a little bit, and came to this conclusion without ever getting to know me.
Such emails used to really bother me, but because I understand what’s happening, that’s no longer the case.
I know that not everyone is going to see eye-to-eye with me.
But when you do feel a connection, well, that’s when the magic starts to happen.
Because I’ll help you uncover the person that you were meant to be.
That authentic genuine person that you are at the core and center of yourself.
And I’ll help you discover what YOU were meant to be doing with your life, as a career, as a job, as a vocation, or what kind of business – that person who you really are, would be building.

So that instead of waking up in the morning, and saying “I’m going to work”, YOU wake up in the morning and say, “Another day of getting to be who I am”.

I filmed this short little clip of my 2-year old son Brock last night.
And though it’s hilarious, it also packs quite a lesson.
I was letting him water the plants around our front porch, but it was starting to get late, and I knew that I still needed to get him ready for bed.
So…
While he was facing the other way, I turned the water off.
The video shows what happened next.
Brock immediately goes to work, trying to figure out how to correct the situation.
You’ll even see him walk over to the water faucet, and try to turn it back on.
And though he didn’t figure it out last night (while I was recording this video), he went back out on the front porch this morning, and discovered how to turn the water on.
In short, that’s what I call “Passionate Problem Solving”.
Brock was determined to figure something out, and he didn’t stop until he’d done so.
To be successful at anything, we must possess this same tenacity.
That’s why I always tell my clients that they’ve got to build a business around something that they’re passionate about.
Something they love so much, that they wouldn’t mind doing it for nuthin.
Because here’s the deal…
When you’re that passionate about something, there’s nothing that can stop you from being successful.
Absolutely NOTHING.
So what are you passionate about?
I want you to give that question some serious thought.
Because the fact is, if you’ve got the passion, I’ve got the “how to” and can show you how to turn that passion into a lifestyle-business that compensates you more than you ever imagined… for doing what you LOVE.

As you probably know, our daughter Elliana was born on March 24th.
And she was born with a bacterial infection, which meant that she was admitted to pediatrics for a week, so the doctors could keep an eye on her.
As soon as we found out what was going on, I sent a quick email to my entire subscriber list.
I needed to give them the news, and let them know that I’d be spending the week at the hospital with my family.
There were a few people who had private consults scheduled that week, and as much as I hated to do it, those appointments had to be rescheduled.
Truth is, with my new daughter in the hospital, I wouldn’t have been at my best anyways.
Little did I know the response that email would have.
When we arrived home 7 days later, I had hundreds and hundreds of emails from people, wanting to know how Elliana and Lisa were doing.
Not a single person was upset at me for taking the week off.
Instead, they wanted to make sure that everyone was alright.
While this was a humbling experience, and let me know that there are many caring people on my subscriber list, it also taught me a valuable lesson.
It taught me the importance of being transparent.
The importance of being open and candid.
I’ve always been this way, but in this specific situation, I definitely thought twice about sharing so much of our personal life with you.
But…
The overwhelming response showed me the error in my thinking.
And now, as I look at the topic of “cliffhangers”, which we’ve been discussing for the last couple days, it dawned on me that I left everyone with a “cliffhanger” when I sent that email about Elliana in March.
And though I didn’t do it intentionally, that was the end result.
I left everyone hanging, wanting to know what was going on.
This is a great strategy to use in your business as well.
I mentioned one of my clients the other day.
Her name is Adrian, and she’s in the process of writing a book.
We’ve been talking about cliffhangers, and how she needs to end the chapters of her book with them.
By doing so, it makes people want to read the next chapter.
I know these last few communications have proven incredibly valuable for her, and I trust that they’ve been just as valuable for you.

Yesterday I said I was going to prove that you could literally make a fortune by sharing your stories and experiences.
If you’re reading this now, as a result of the email or blog post you read yesterday, this point should be well made.
You’re here right now, because I left you hanging, and you had to know more.
That’s called a “cliffhanger”.
Though the way I used it yesterday was extremely mild.
With a little bit of thought, you can build cliffhangers that are much more powerful.
Incidentally… Adrian (who’s a client of mine), if you happen to be reading this, it applies directly to the conversation we’ve been having in regard to the book you’re publishing.
Alright, let me give you an example.
The other night I was watching Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel.
Right as the show is coming to an end, Phil, who’s the skipper of the Cornelia Marie, had a stroke.
One of his sons found him in his stateroom on the boat, and he was completely unresponsive.
Fortunately they were at dock when the incident occurred.
They called 911, and within minutes, the ambulance was at the dock, and the medical team was tending to Phil.
The show ended with a shot of the ambulance pulling away from the dock, with Phil and his son in the back, heading to the hospital.
Now that’s a CLIFFHANGER.
Everyone who watches the show wants to know what happens to Phil.
Does he live?
Does he die?
If he does die, who will skipper the boat?
Because I’m a big fan of the show, and actually used to be a fisherman, this especially hits home with me.
You can use cliffhangers like this in your business as well.
Because here’s the deal…
When it comes right down to it, the reason people stay on my subscriber list is because of the stories and experiences I share with them.
Just like I did in this email.
Sure, they’re interested in the knowledge that I can share with them, but that will only go so far.
If I shared knowledge, but did it like those boring college professors do, it wouldn’t go over very well.

This is one that I recently used, and I did so, without even realizing what I was doing.

Back in 2003, my friend Chet suggested that I start keeping a daily journal, because as I became more and more successful, other people would be chomping at the bit to get their hands on this journal.
Looking at the feedback I’ve received since telling everyone about this journal, he was RIGHT.

I just got home from sunny Phoenix, where it hit 100 degrees.
Even better than the great weather, was the purpose of my visit, which was for Joe Polish’s Mastermind Group.
There’s 54 people in this group, and let me tell you, these guys know how to have FUN.
They’re definitely not your typical dry, boring business owner, who’s struggling to get by and barely making ends meet.
No SIREE.
These business owners are all about having fun, which is probably why they’re doing so well.
The photo above is of my friend Bedros (who’s also in the group), and it shows him throwing plastic eggs full of money from the stage at his recent seminar.
And take a look at the way he’s dressed.
He’s definitely not looking like your typical seminar host.
Why?
Because Bedros believes in breaking all the typical business rules.
After all, his business is a natural extension of the person he is, and how he sees himself interacting with other people.
And that’s how business is supposed to be.
If more people ran businesses like this, they’d be having a lot more fun, and they’d be making a lot more money.
I’ve never held a seminar like Bedros, or thrown plastic eggs full of money into an audience, but I sure do have a lot of fun in my own business.
